License Lookup

Does your contractor need a license? Some trades do require that the business or at least one individual employed by the business be licensed. Some trades do not require a license at all.
 
NC Burglar Alarm
A business must be licensed by the State of North Carolina to install security systems or security cameras. The business owner and every employee must go through a criminal background check and be finger printed. All employees carry a NC State burglar alarm picture identification card.  

NC Electrical License
The State of North Carolina requirements for an Electrical License are as follows:

The business owner or corporate officers do Not need an electrical license. There must be at least one licensed individual employed within the company. For example  a company with 500 employees working as helpers, journeymen and electricians need to have only one licensed person within the company.

Some municipalities have adopted their own laws in regards to licensing. For instance the City of Asheville requires that each non-licensed employee of an electrical contracting company be accompanied by a licensed employee. The City of Asheville offers a Journeyman Electrician exam which upon completion they will accept as a license in lieu of taking the state test.

The electrical contractors license limits are as follows:

  • Limited - No single project over $25,000
  • Intermediate - No single project over $75,000
  • Unlimited  - any project of any value.

An individual or company can do construction work up to $30,000 without a license.

NC Home Inspectors

To be licensed as a home inspector, an applicant must do all of the following:

1) Submit a completed application to the Board.
2) Pass a licensing exam prescribed by the Board.
3) Have a minimum net assets or a bond in an amount not less than $5,000 nor more than $10,000.
4) Pay the applicable fees.
5) Meet one of the following three conditions.

  • a) Have a high school diploma or its equivalent, have been engaged as a licensed associate home inspector for at least 1 year and have completed 100 home inspections for compensation

  • b) Have education experience the Board considers to be equivalent to that required by subpart (a) of this subdivision

  • c) Be licensed as a general contractor, architect or professional engineer.
     

    To be licensed as an associate home inspector, a person must do all of the following:
    1) Submit a completed application to the Board
    2) Pass a licensing exam prescribed by the Board
    3) Pay the applicable fee
    4) Have a high school diploma or its equivalent
    5) Be employed by or affiliated with or intend to be employed by or affiliated with a licensed home inspector and submit sworn statement by that licensed home inspector certifying that the licensed home inspector will "actively supervise and train the applicant."
