Lighting and appliances are the second largest consumer of electricity in your home, just behind heating and cooling. According to the Energy Star web site. If every American home replaced just one light bulb with a  compact fluorescent, we would save enough energy to light more than 2.5 million homes for a year and prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions of nearly 800,000 cars.

Some quick facts about compact fluorescents:

  • Consume 2/3 less energy.
  • Last 10 times longer.
  • Generate 70% less heat.

Where and where not to use compact fluorescents.

  • Use where lights are used the most. Kitchen, living room etc.
  • Do not use in enclosed fixtures unless the bulb is specifically labeled for that purpose. Otherwise the bulb may work erratically.
  • Do not use outdoors unless labeled for outdoor use. Most fluorescent do not work well in cold environments.
  • Do not use on a fixture that is attached to a dimmer unless the bulb is specifically labeled for dimmer use.
  • Compact fluorescents do not work well with motion sensor switches.

Compact fluorescents are available at all hardware stores including Lowes and Home Depot. Even grocery and drug stores now have them.
